Freddie Sheene, Kevin Schwantz, Ago, old bikes, new bikes, old cars, new cars - it must be Goodwood Festival of Speed.
More pic's to follow, but the ride down the motorway was pretty boring

My good mate Steve blagged a couple of free Saturday tickets for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and as all his best mates were busy he asked me if I'd like the other .
Well, the weather couldn't have been better and after an early start we arrived just before 9.00am. For those that don't know, Goodwood is a couple of hundred miles ride down to the south coast, situated just outside Chichester. Bikes were diverted before the main venue into parking at the Goodwood Circuit, which is about a mile from the Festival of Speed (FoS), which sort of takes place in Lord March's front garden and up his driveway
There was a free helmet park, and a very efficient free mini bus shuttle straight to the main entrance for the FoS from the circuit. Overall, I must say the organisation was superb, with a great atmosphere, which came through from the riders, drivers and crowds.
One of the big attractions about the FoS from it's inception is the ability to get up close to the cars, bikes and drivers and despite the growth in size of the event, this is still very much the case.
The Goodwood Circuit, where the Revival Race meeting is held in September has been beautifully and sympathetically restored as the end photo's show, and the whole Estate really is a credit to the work and vision of Lord March, who really has created these events from nothing.
Anyways, here's a chunk of pictures from the day. Sorry if there's no glitzy Lambo's, Ferrari's and F1 cars, but I only snapped what took my and fancy, and much of the modern stuff just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.
So, let's start with what is one of my top five Ferrari's of all time, possibly even the top, an ex Ecurie Ecosse (hence the dark blue paint with white stripe) 250 SWB, 3.0 litre V12. Much prettier to my eye than the iconic GTO.
McLaren F1
Mercedes DTM
Jaguar XJS Touring Car
Early pre-war Mercedes
Goodwood House with Alfa Romeo sculpture outside.
Stunning (I thought anyway), Triumph 2000 Italia, early 60's, designed by Michelotti who did quite a few Triumphs - Spitfire Mk4, GT6 Mk3, Vitesse, 2000 / 2500, TR4 / 5 / 6 and the Stag. Only 300 odd 2000 Italia were made by Vignale and were based on the TR3a chassis. Just love how clean and simple it all looks, always a sucker for cars with simple lines and thin pillars.
Jaguar C Type Replica
Americana featured quite heavily in the display areas and there were some stunners, not normally a big fan of rods and customs, but you couldn't help but be impressed by the craftmanship (and ££££'s) that had gone into some of these.
Auburn Speedster was super clean and looked stunning in a very dark brown metallic.
This 1949 Ford "Shoebox" was a stunner, ultra clean inside and out, so smooth and uncluttered, very subtly chopped and stretched it was also converted to RHD at the request of the owner, a certain Mr Clapton
Ooops, forgot, it's a bike forum, best post a few pic's
Gorgeous Magni converted 850, chain drive MV Agusta, I didn't ask as I couldn't afford it
As per my previous post, Freddie Sheene was one of the guests of honour and a couple of Barry's old bikes were out on display.
Freddie rode the Icon Sheene, not my cup of tea, ultra expensive, and I'd be surprised if the manage to sell the 52 they've got planned for production.
From the Formula 750 era
TZ750 Yamaha's, early and late models
Shocking when you look how spindly the forks look and how weedy the brakes are for a vicious, 180 mph two stroke
Kawasaki H1R 750
[img]
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/5240/p1010335medium.jpg[/img]
Ex Peter Williams Spaceframed Norton 750
Full set of Laverda's, 1000 Triple, 750 and 500 Twins
Another rare Magni bike, the one a Moto Guzzi Australia
The one modern production car I took a photo of, the new Mercedes Gullwing, I did like this one
So we're back to cars
Iconic Porsche 917
... complete with space saver spare wheel
Cooling fan for the flat 12 air cooled motor
Lancia Martini
Ferrari 512LM with rear mounted 5 litre flat 12 engine
Andretti's 1972 Ferrari 312 F1 car, another flat 12 engine from the 3 litre era.
1964 Ferrari 158, V8
Suspension components polished and plated not for show as you might think, but to aid crack detection.
Loved the Jeff Koons BMW M3 Art Car BMW have a long history (and extensive collection) of cars that they've commissioned artists to paint over the years.
As well as the main drmatic sculpture outside the house, there were also quite a few others scattered about.
Guitars
Louis Renault
Polished Radial Aero Engine for sale
The Who VW Bus
Red Arrows
..... and finally, a few shots of the magnificently restored Goodwood Circuit
A long ride, over not very exciting roads, but well worth it, a great day _________________ _________________

Thanks for sharing BMK. I am not much of a car fan but i do appreciate something 'different' to the modern stuff and really enjoyed looking at the pics as well as the write up.
How do you remember them all? Do you know what they are already or did you write down what they were? I know for sure i'd never know what most of them are.
Thanks again. _________________ BLUE(UK) |

A lot of the stuff I do unfortunately know and remember, as it's just my era , plus with the Ferrari stuff it was daily work for much of the '80's, I don't write anything down, but I do take snaps of any interesting literature. _________________ _________________

Here's the other photo I got of their stand with the Storz flat track Harley with chain conversion on. I remember they had a couple of other custom Harleys, not quite my thing, and the polished Airstream Trailer as well as the Chesil Speedsters.
I don't think the tickets are cheap, but it's certainly a great event, and the combined mix of old, new, cars and bikes is fantastic, it's certainly all inclusive with something for everyone, there were even a batch of protoype electric cars going up the hill from various manufacturers, they sounded shite though _________________ _________________

Can't say I was actively seeking out plastic cars with electric motors, I could have stayed at home and played Scalextric for that _________________ _________________

top report again Martin ...thanks for that..
some blokes i know went last year and as you can imagine all the local accommodation is booked well in advance. not to be put off they found a small B&B from a Portsmouth postcode search and booked it for 6 of them..
nothing unusual in that ....
until they got to Portsmouth
and realised that the place was actually on the Isle of Wight
